In 2009, it seems that many households will soon be under attack by furry, plush electronic hamster pets called the Zhu Zhu pets. Don't worry though, these guys are non-violent and completely harmless. They're a popular new kids toy by Cephia LLC that's probably going to be the bestselling kids toy item for the 2009 holidays.  These hamster "critters" provide hours of fun for children everywhere and outlast the real animal versions of the hamsters.  Not only that, they don't make messes, and feature an "artificial intelligence" that makes them very fun to play with.  But don't rush out to the stores just yet.

The problem might be finding these Zhu Zhu hamsters out in retail stores. They sell out in record time just like many other popular toys of the past, such as the Tickle Me Elmos, Nintendo Wii's and if you want to go back real far, the Cabbage Patch Kids. There haven't been any reports of fist fights or people being trampled in stores, but it wouldn't be surprising if a melee occurs around Black Friday or closer to Christmas time.  Your best bet may be to shop around online and find a merchant willing to sell these guys at a bargain price.  Unfortunately, many merchants are looking to profit on the toy's popularity.  Checking stores for inventories or calling ahead might be your best bets to securing one for your child.

So why are these guys so popular? Basically, it seems these plush, electronic toys are the closest things parents can give their kids to a pet, without it being real. That eliminates a lot of hassles. Kids usually want a dog or cat, or even live hamster, but they eventually leave the responsibilities up to their parents.  Parents end up cleaning up messes, feeding the animal, and then having to one day explain to their kids what happens when it unfortunately passes away.  With Zhu Zhu pets, you won't have that problem, as long as the kids don't abuse them as toys.  They run on rechargeable batteries, giving them a nearly endless life.  Kids have really taken to these gadgets, and the media is reporting they are the top toy to get this holiday season.

Keep your eye out in stores as these tend to sell as quickly as they arrive in shipments. Many kids have these hot toys on their 2009 holiday wish lists, and are likely to be mighty disappointed if they don't see it under the tree. Then again, you could always go with a real hamster, but who wants the hassle, right?
